Hair Straigtening Q and A

Hi y’all and happy FriYay! I apologize for being a little behind on my hair post today. It has been a busy morning. I will jump right to today’s post. I asked my stylist a few questions that I am sure some of you have always wondered about. How do I prep my hair for straightening?

Start with clean dry hair. Either blow dried or sitting under a dryer. When you use a dryer, don’t allow the hair to dry all the way under the dryer. Finish the job with a blow dryer.

What kind of shampoos and conditioner should I use?
You should use a PH balance shampoo. Starting with a cleansing shampoo and right after a moisturizing shampoo. Follow with your choice of conditioner.

Do I need a deep moisturizer?
Your choice of conditioner is important, because it provides protection for your against the heat from the straightening Iron.

Do I need to apply a protectant before straightening my hair?
This depends largely on the condition of your hair
For soft and healthy hair it is not required but remember the shampoo and conditioner choices already provides protection.
For hair that is damaged or brittle apply a silicon based protectant. Depending on the texture of your natural hair, a protectant will be needed also to tame frizz.

How do I apply a protectant on my hair?
A dime size is ample enough, but also also depends on your hair length and thickness. Apply too much and it will weigh the hair down.

Do I need to apply a sealer on my hair?
Applying any sealer (jojoba, moroccan oil) before straightening your hair will affect the end results. The protectant or conditioner will work fine. You can apply oils to your edges or tips after straightening is over.

How do I get straightened hair with a bounce and shine?
Leaving out oils and sticking with the right shampoo and conditioner  and minimal application of protectant will produce this result.

What type of Iron do I use to straighten my hair?
For relaxed or softer texture natural hair a Cereamic Iron will get the job done.
For thicker natural hair a Titanium Iron works best.

How do I maintain my hair?
Using a Paddle brush, wrap your hair around and cover with a Wrap cap or a Du rag. Helps keeps your hair moisturized and  keeps it straightened longer.
