Oil treatment for black hair

HI y’all happy FriYAY! Happy new month too! I am so excited about the new month and all it has it stock! Today I am sharing a quick hair post about oil treatment. This is not a hot treatment regime. I am a huge fan of getting oil treatments and this regime is my go-to when I am experiencing dryness in my hair or scalp or breakage. It is also a good monthly regime for healthy hair. I have been doing this for years now and it is helpful for any hair type or state, from Relaxed to Natural hair.  I also use this treatment on my daughter’s hair. My magic ingredient is unrefined/pure virgin coconut oil. Be sure to only use this type of oil for the treatment.

I feel its easier to understand my post when its in a Q and A form, so here it goes.

Why coconut oil?

Coconut oil is an amazing oil with so many wonderful benefits from head to toe. I chose coconut oil because it is an amazing moisturizing oil when used in this manner. It replenishes the moisture to your hair.

What state does my hair has to be?

Your hair can be clean or dirty, it doesn’t matter. It needs to be done on Dry NOT Wet hair. This is very important because as we know water repels oil and we  want the oil to act as a moisturizer. This is why it is very important, for the treatment to be effective.

Can I use it on relaxed hair?

When I had a relaxer, my stylist would recommend this treatment before I got my relaxers. It protects the hair from the relaxer (as you know they apply oil before they apply the relaxer, so it is an extra precaution, which never hurts)  and prevents itchy scalp common with getting relaxers.

Can I perform this before getting braids and weaves?

It is an excellent idea to perform this treatment, it adds a layer of protection to the hair and it adds moisture to the hair in a way that wont be available to the hair till the hair style is off.

When do you perform this treatment?

I always perform this treatment the night before I wash my hair or in the case of those with relaxed hair, the night before getting a relaxer.

Why do you cover it with a plastic bag or shower cap?
The plastic bag or shower cap traps the heat generated from your scalp which creates a natural steamer and better oil penetration into your scalp and hair.

What are the steps?

I section out my hair in 4 parts and I then begin to apply the oil from root to tip. Ensure that you massage it into your scalp too to stimulate it. I find that it is easier with solid coconut oil which melts once it hits the scalp. But liquid coconut is perfectly fine just a bit messy. I take a plastic bag and cover my hair with it. Ensure that you tie the bag to prevent the oil from leaking down your face.

Most plastic bags have a hole or two so that is fine. I usually re-up with another bag. A light plastic shower cap (hotel shower caps) will also do the trick. I cover my hair with a satin bonnet and I am done.

What next?

I leave my hair in this condition overnight so about 8-12 hours. You can then wash following your regular washing regime, here is mine or you can go to the hair salon to get it washed or get your hair relaxed. By morning most of the oil would have been absorbed by your hair so it never drips.

I perform this on my daugter’s hair in the morning and by evening, I wash her hair.
